Tuesday evening’s session with Pathways concluded a six week program in which four children designed and painted two large steel garbage cans provided by the City of Sarnia. This program, an ongoing initiative of the Lawrence House Centre for the Arts in partnership with the Pathways Health Centre for Children and the City of Sarnia, provides an inclusive art program for children with disabilities.
Headed by the Lawrence House’s Lead Art Educator Hazel Rogers and Pathways Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Amy Spadafora, this program produces finished artworks which are a highly visible example of the achievements of the participants. Once completed, each garbage can is placed by the City of Sarnia into a park. This first set will be placed at the Animal Farm in Canatara Park, with more to come as the program continues.
Extra chairs had to be brought in to accommodate the nearly 40 people who crowded the Turret Room this past Friday to enjoy a wonderful selection of holiday music performed by three talented harpists, Ruth Myers, Katherine Oppermann, and Celisa Gutierrez.
A Crowded Turret Room
A repertoire that included such holiday favorites as Greensleeves, The Coventry Carol and Carol of the Bells was well received by the audience who enjoyed the rare opportunity to hear the sound of three full-sized concert harps played beautifully.
Introduced by Executive Director Ann Stirling, the harpists arrive
The lead harpist, Ruth Myers has appeared with the Detroit Symphony, the Michigan Opera Theater and has recorded with the Clarion Wind Ensemble. On the faculty of Eastern Michigan University, her talents are much in demand and she has taught at Michigan State and the Tanglewood Institute to name a few. Her accompanists, Katherine Oppermann and Celisa Guitierrez are accomplished students and have played with many Michigan symphonies and orchestras.
The Lawrence House participated for the first time in the Kinsman Santa Claus Parade that was held on Saturday Dec. 06th. In partnership with Shadowland Theatre, a host of LHCA volunteers and the many donations of empty water bottles we created a replica of the Lawrence House constructed entirely of recycled materials and LED lighting. The effect was truly magical, reminiscent of an ice palace shimmering in the snow.
The process of the construction was complimented by many curious visitors dropping in to watch, and many people were delighted with the concept and clever use of the materials.
Shadowland Theatre troupe were in Sarnia for a full week working in tandem with the volunteers and the fabulous space was filled with laughter, great music and palpable excitement as the float took shape.
I would like to thank the Shadowland group- Artistic Director Brad Harley
Alice Norton, Myra, Jim Bish and Chris Wilson. Always in the trenches and collaborating with Brad was Dennis Mitchell a volunteer with the Lawrence House. Many hours were spent designing models, tracking down recycling possibilities, taking photos of the flatbed, measurements and just plain hard work on the construction! Bravo Dennis!!!

First Friday Gallery Walk
The Gallery Walk a concept for the Downtown area that was introduced in November 2006.This fresh incentive was developed with the galleries downtown - a cooperative effort to have a reception, or “opening” of new exhibits, on the First Friday of each month. This series of cosmopolitan events invites the public to explore our lively arts scene in the arts and culture district-Downtown Sarnia. This year the Lawrence House with the sponsorship of Bluewater Power and Lanxess are introducing musical performances in an intimate evening atmosphere at the Lawrence House, to compliment the visual artists opening night.
The First Friday Gallery Walk has developed over the past two years, into a monthly event that the public earmarks on their schedules to attend. It has become a vehicle for artists to network and meet new prospective clients, for the community to be engaged with the arts in a convivial atmosphere, while producing a positive image for the for the Downtown area that showcases the neighbourhood as THE Arts and Culture District of Sarnia. The incentive was developed with the Galleries downtown in which all participate in a cooperative effort to have a reception, or “opening”of new exhibits. The event takes place on the same evening to promote our lively arts scene in Sarnia. In a very short time, this incentive has proven to be extremely popular with our community. Attendance measured at approximately 150 people visiting each participating gallery over the evening.
The Lawrence House focus this year was introducing a series of Cutting Edge Emerging artists each month. The works have been fresh and vibrant and the openings have been complimented by performances of local musicians during the evening.
This month the Lawrence House welcomes Sarnia Artists Workshop- a group show that will include recent works by Lorna Schmidt, Elizabeth Martiniuk, Rita Viscount, Anthony Wright and many more. The evening will be complimented by a performance of jazz band Dominent 7.
It is through this kind of programming that potential exists for future businesses to invest in the Arts and Culture District of Sarnia.
The Lawrence House acknowledges that through introducing a concert series to the public during the First Friday Gallery Walk, it has added an exciting element to the First Friday Evening events and was significant in creating a “buzz’ in the city. This is a crucial element for our area in realizing the benefits of supporting our diverse and unique creative community.
Having an active and vibrant arts community enriches our lives and enhances our lifestyle as well as offering real benefits to business, industry and our economic development. Having a strong arts community gives Sarnia a distinct business edge by helping us attract and retain a creative and skilled workforce, making ours a community to which others will be happy to relocate to.
It is through programming like this that creates an urbane and cosmopolitan feel to the downtown area and will have a direct result of businesses investing in the Arts and Culture District of Sarnia.
